Sherwood Observatory

At Integrated Doorsets, we’re incredibly proud to have played a role in the exciting transformation of Sherwood Observatory in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

The project saw the construction of a brand-new science discovery centre and planetarium, built alongside the original observatory building. As part of the development, we were trusted to design, manufacture, and supply a full range of bespoke performance doorsets that help bring the new space to life, safely, accessibly, and beautifully.

Working on this landmark project meant more than just supplying doors; it was about contributing to a facility that aims to spark curiosity in science, space, and engineering. Backed by National Lottery funding and supported by the local community, this project marks a new chapter for the observatory, transforming it from an enthusiast-run site into a public hub for learning, exploration, and tourism.

From the outset, it was clear that Sherwood Observatory wasn’t just another building, it was a place designed to inspire. So we took care to understand every detail of the project’s purpose and layout, working closely with the architects and contractors to ensure the right doorsets were delivered, to the right specification, for each space.

The new centre includes a range of multi-use areas, from the immersive planetarium and exhibition zones to classrooms, accessible WCs, staff areas and more. To support these varied needs, we supplied a combination of our trusted Ovi, Enduracor, and Plasform ranges, each tailored for performance and visual appeal.

For the planetarium viewing room, where a calm, immersive atmosphere is essential, we provided acoustic-rated doorsets offering sound reduction up to 38dB. These allow visitors to focus on the experience without outside distractions. In line with building regulations and safety standards, we also supplied FD30 fire-rated doorsets throughout the centre. Every doorset was designed for its intended environment, whether that meant higher durability in areas with heavy footfall, water-resistant materials for toilets and kitchens, or accessible configurations for inclusive use.

Each product was made to fit both the technical requirements and the visual tone of the building. For example, we finished several of the doors in a custom “deep space blue”, reflecting the observatory’s astronomical theme and giving the space a distinctive character.

We always say a door isn’t just a door, it’s a key part of the experience. In a building designed to open minds and welcome people of all ages, that’s especially true. At Sherwood Observatory, the doorsets don’t just serve a practical purpose. They help shape a safe, inclusive and visually engaging environment. By collaborating closely with the full project team, we ensured every detail, from colour and texture to performance and placement, worked together to support the building’s educational goals.

Being part of the Sherwood Observatory project was genuinely rewarding. It’s a space built to bring science and discovery into the heart of the community, and we’re honoured that our products will quietly play a role in that experience, whether it’s a child walking into their first space workshop, or a family watching the stars unfold in the planetarium.

This is exactly the kind of work we love at Integrated Doorsets: tailored, meaningful, and built to last.
